Swindon dentist plan approved alongside new block of flats
A plan for a new dental practice and block of flats on land behind Covingham Square has been approved.
Mayhew Dental, which operates from a site at the end of Covingham Drive, behind the shops in the square and overlooking Dorcan Way, will be able to demolish its existing building and an unused single-storey former physiotherapy clinic.
In their place, the practice will be able to construct a new three-storey building, with much improved facilities for dentists and patients on the ground floor, and twelve apartments on the upper two floors, four two-bed units and eight one-bedroom units. bedroom. apartments.
Plans show that the single building will be located in the southeast corner of the land, closest to Dorcan Way, which will allow a turning radius for an ambulance.
Mayhew’s app said: ‘Following the Covid pandemic there have been several significant changes to regulations to enable the provision of dental services in England. Many of these current regulations will remain even after the easing of Covid restrictions in the country.
“The current dental surgery building is no longer suitable and has serious limitations in maximizing the delivery of dental care in the future.”
In the new building there will be two waiting rooms one on the ground floor and one on the second floor to allow greater distance for patients.
There will be larger, easier to use accessible washrooms and improved facilities for staff.
The new building will include men’s and women’s locker and locker rooms, staff washrooms, and a staff and dining room. The ba is a large and comfortable space for holding training meetings and for everyone to have lunch together.
The Swindon Borough Council planners’ report which recommended approval of the scheme stated: ‘The residential units will make a positive contribution to the borough’s housing stock and the dental practice will improve the level of community services available. The scheme complies with all other relevant policies adopted from the Swindon Borough Local Plan. »
Mayhew Dental originally received planning permission in November 2020 to convert the empty physiotherapy clinic on the site behind shops in Covingham Square into apartments.
The proposals were to demolish the unused one-story building on the firm’s site and construct a three-story nine-apartment building.
But the Covid-19 pandemic and the extra precautions dentists have had to take have shown the clinic the limitations of the existing practice building, forcing a rethink.
