An inclusive and fun dental experience your child will look forward to
Are you looking for a good pediatric dentist? Like most parents, I am particularly careful about the doctors I choose for my children. I’m looking for those who listen, don’t rush for exams, have good communication skills, are friendly and understanding, and of course, those who do a great job taking care of my children. I was looking for a new pediatric dentist and decided to give it a try. Cherry Orchard Pediatric Dentistryled by Dr. Lisa Cherry, DDS, who has practiced for 20 years.
She and all of her staff were amazing in arranging the appointment, reminders, payment plans, and then all the work done during the actual appointments. I went there with high expectations and was very pleased with our experience and am happy to tell you about it.
About Cherry Orchard Dentistry
Cherry Orchard Dentistry only opened in late 2021, but Dr. Lisa Cherry, DDS, has been practicing for 20 years, most of that time working with children. It is obvious that it is his passion.
The desk was designed and built with children and their families in mind. The reception area is spacious and beautiful, with a locally designed downtown Greenville mural and lots of cute animals, bright flowers and fun colors. The door to the operations area looks like it’s out of the book, The Hobbitwhich I adore because this book is brilliant.
The first thing I noticed after walking through the hobbit door were three workstations set up in a large bay. I thought it was great for several reasons. One was because I could sit and watch my two children at the same time and be there for them in case they needed some motherly love. The second reason was that they could be worked on both simultaneously, which saved me time. The x-ray room is adjacent to this large bay for easy access and televisions are installed above each chair to entertain the children during their cleanings.
There are several other private rooms in the office, each decorated with artwork from patients and Dr. Cherry’s own children. This is where the state of the art Solea Lasers are used. More on that in a moment.
Dr Lisa Cherry
You know how you know you like someone five minutes after meeting them? It’s Dr. Lisa Cherry.
I loved her from the moment we met. Not only is she a fun and interesting person to chat with, but she was also very nice to my daughters. Her easy-going nature immediately appealed to them, especially my eldest who she persuaded to pull a tooth of her own while we were on our first date. I thought she was going to extract it herself but no, she encouraged my daughter to do it herself and helped her along the way. I was thrilled because that tooth had been needing to come out for a while and well, I hadn’t taken my kids to the dentist in a time that I’d rather not tell you all. But Dr. Cherry and his staff were totally unfazed and just did their job and made my kids (and I) feel comfortable and happy.
All the staff, from the receptionist to the office coordinator to the dental hygienists, were nothing short of spectacular. They explained what was going on, answered all my questions and weren’t rushed the whole time we were there.
When we had to return to continue work on one of my daughters, Dr. Cherry explained what was going to happen and encouraged my daughter and me. Honestly, I was more nervous than my daughter, but Dr. Cherry helped me feel comfortable and confident.
Dr. Cherry’s goal is to provide a dental care experience that makes the child not only comfortable in the dentist’s office, but happy to come back. She doesn’t want them to be afraid. She wants them to be excited to come back; instill a good experience with a dentist early in their lives. She did it with my two children. They left with smiles on their faces and said they both loved Dr. Cherry and the hygienists who cared for them. Even when my daughter had to return for further dental work, she had no fear or apprehension. That’s a big win in my book and a sign that the dentist is doing something right.
What most of us parents need for our children at the dentist is preventive care twice a year. This includes cleaning, x-rays, fluoride treatment if the parent wishes, and the option of sealants.
Children come in and have x-rays taken, then are seated in comfortable chairs in the bay or in a private room, given sunglasses and a choice of movie or show to watch. The dental hygienists do the cleaning and Dr. Cherry comes in to read the x-rays and examine the gums and teeth. If there is anything left to do, she will discuss the options with the parents. If not, and the child is cavity-free, they can put their name on the big cavity-free tree behind the bay, yay! Kids get to choose a prize (because kids love prizes) and walk away with a small goody bag containing a toothbrush and toothpaste.
The Solea Laser
One of the really interesting services offered by Cherry Orchard is the Solea Laser dentistry. This type of laser is performed without anesthesia, drilling, needles or noise. It’s virtually painless and allows children to resume normal activities the same day. Dr. Cherry used the Solea laser for the job my daughter needed. I couldn’t believe how fast it was and my daughter wasn’t in pain. I kept asking her how she felt afterwards and looked at myself like I was an alien because she felt good. Such a change in the dental industry, but especially for children and their parents, because it’s so hard to watch your child suffer!
The Solea laser is used for fixing tongue ties, dental extractions and other soft tissue work.
Cherry Orchard also offers help with the emergencies such as severe toothache, facial swelling, swollen gums, cut lip/cheek or tongue and dental trauma such as a broken tooth.
Dr. Cherry has two children of her own, so she understands that you need immediate help in an emergency and the office is there to take care of that.
Cherry Orchard understands that some children need more relaxation or sedation during larger dental work. They use two methods here: nitrous oxide and IV sedation.
Nitrous oxide is breathed in through the nose during the dental procedure and simply helps to relax the child and increases their level of pain tolerance. Before this is done, Dr. Cherry sends the child home with a similar nose mask that will be used during the procedure so the child can practice nose breathing at home. My daughter had to use it and practiced a lot before her dental work was done and she did very well. It was a painless experience for her and she was back to normal around the time we left the office.
For children who may be too young to understand how to use the nasal mask and nitrous oxide or who have more severe anxiety, Cherry Orchard offers IV sedation with the help of a pediatric anesthesiologist.
And they know a million things can go wrong when it comes to your child’s teeth, so they also offer a range of rrestorative care as well. This includes everything from composite restorations and stainless steel crowns to space maintenance and extractions. Their hope is to use preventative care to avoid these issues, but when they do occur, Cherry Orchard can help fix them.
Dentistry for special needs
Cherry Orchard Pediatric Dentistry is an inclusive environment and strives to provide care to anyone who needs it. They understand that children with special needs may have to do things a little differently and are more than happy to accommodate these families.
Typically, the first visit will simply be a meeting with an office tour. Parents and children can meet Dr. Cherry and his staff and see what the office is like during a less busy, quieter time. The second visit can be scheduled for as long as the child is comfortable and can be a repeat of the first visit or something else that helps both the child and the doctor get to the next step .
These visits can be repeated for as long as necessary to establish trust between the parents, the child and the doctor. It’s truly a team effort and something Cherry Orchard Dentistry looks forward to doing with families with special needs.
Cherry Orchard Pediatric Dentistry recognizes that not all families have dental insurance and offers three self-pay options: Cash, credit or financing.
Honest Mom Review
I had put off looking for a new dentist for a while and was nervous about choosing one. I wasn’t sure if I would stay with Dr Cherry when I walked in – I was planning on cleaning up for my kids and seeing how it would go. Honestly, it was the easiest decision to make once I met Dr. Cherry and his staff and saw how attentive they were to my children, how kind and caring they were to me as a parent. , and how they listened to me and communicated with me.
Dental care is important and I am so happy to have found Dr. Lisa Cherry and her staff. That’s one less thing I have to worry about as I navigate parenthood!
